Canadian Mode Share of Transport to Work

The magazine Money Sense recently published a list of its Best Places to Live in Canada. This list is about as flawed as all others of its kind, but it did contain an interesting gem of data: as a percentage of commuters, more Yellowknifers walk and bike to work than do Vancouverites: 24% versus 16%. (At least, that was the case in 2006. We may never have more updated statistics, thanks to our all-knowing Conservative government.)

So I thought I might dig a little deeper, to see if there are any other hidden gems. Here’s a few highlights:

  • Victoria has the lowest mode share of car drivers in the country at 47%
  • Victoria also has the highest mode share of walkers/bikers in the country at 33%. Yellowknife comes in second place at 24%
  • Montreal and Toronto have the highest mode share of transit riders in the country at 35%

Have a look at all the stats in graph form.
